Rimonabant is a selective CB1 endocannabinoid receptor antagonist used to treat type 2 obesity. A number of serious clinical trials demonstrated consistent results: after one year of treatment most patients lost 10% of their body weight, while the rest reported a 5% loss. This medicine suppresses appetite and therefore makes the process of weight loss easier for the patient. However, this medicine is supposed to be combined with a healthy balanced diet, as simply taking the drug will not help to lose weight.
Rimonabat is commonly known under the brand name Acomplia and comes in yellow-and-red tablets – the usual dose is 20 mg. and it needs to be taken once a day before breakfast. Contraindications for rimonabant include hypersensitivity or allergic reaction to the drug, lactose intolerance, age (younger than 18 and older than 75), impaired liver or kidney function, pregnancy or breast-feeding (may be dangerous for the foetus), and epilepsy. In all of these cases it’s not recommended to use rimonabant, otherwise the patient must be placed under a close observation of a doctor. Rimonabant may increase the incidence of suicidal thoughts in patients with uncontrolled psychiatric condition, so it's important to inform your doctor of any important aspects of your medical history before the treatment starts.
